Incontinence in dogs

If an otherwise house-trained dog suddenly loses urine – for example when lying down, sleeping or walking – this can be a sign of incontinence. This is an uncontrolled release of urine or feces, which can have many causes.

Common triggers are:

  • Bladder or sphincter weakness
  • Neuter-related changes
  • Impairment of nerve function, e.g., as a result of:
  • Spondylosis (degenerative changes in the spine)
  • Intervertebral disc strain or herniation
  • Age-related decline in nerve function

Neurologically caused incontinence occurs more frequently, especially in older dogs or dogs with spinal problems. Affected animals sometimes also exhibit accompanying symptoms such as tremors, unsteady gait, coordination problems, or muscle weakness.

Nervous system and incontinence – how are they related?

The nervous system – consisting of the brain, spinal cord, and nerve pathways – controls all vital processes in the body, including bladder and bowel control. If the relevant nerve pathways are impaired, this can lead to disrupted stimulus transmission – and thus to uncontrolled excretions.

The problem is that nerve tissue regenerates more slowly than many other tissue types. Even the smallest disturbances can quickly become noticeable – especially if the body is not adequately nourished.

What dog owners should also consider

In addition to medical assessment and targeted rest, the dog’s daily environment also plays a role in dealing with incontinence. A non-slip mat, elevated food and water bowls, and regular walks can help reduce stress and prevent insecurity. Especially during phases when nerve conduction is impaired, dogs benefit from established routines, a quiet environment, and appropriate exercise.

Weight should also be controlled: Excess weight increases pressure on the spine and can exacerbate existing problems. A species-appropriate diet with a high moisture content, few additives, and an adjusted energy intake can be helpful – especially for older or sensitive animals.
