Vitamin D is one of the essential micronutrients and plays an important role in calcium and phosphate metabolism. In dogs, it supports, among other things, the normal development and function of bones as well as the body’s immune system. Adequate intake can also have a positive effect on muscles, skin, and cell metabolism – especially in older dogs.

Why is vitamin D so important for dogs?

Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium and is therefore a key component for healthy bone growth and the stability of the musculoskeletal system. The physiological function of the immune system is also supported by vitamin D. Supplementation can be particularly useful for dogs with increased age-related needs or with special demands on the musculoskeletal system.

Possible consequences of inadequate intake

Persistently low vitamin D levels in dogs can be associated with impaired mineral utilization. Typical signs can sometimes be seen in bone structure or general vitality. Especially in cases of an unbalanced diet, such as only dry food, or in old age, a needs-based intake is recommended to provide the best possible support for the organism.
