Gum inflammation – medically known as gingivitis – is one of the most common diseases in dogs’ mouths. It often develops gradually and initially goes unnoticed. The first signs can be reddened or swollen gums, unpleasant breath, decreased appetite, or occasional drooling. In advanced cases, the gums recede, which can lead to loose teeth and pain.

How does gingivitis develop in dogs?

The main cause is an imbalance in the oral flora. Soft deposits (plaque) form on the teeth, consisting of food residue, saliva, and bacteria. If this plaque is not removed regularly, it hardens into tartar due to minerals in the saliva. This makes it easier for bacteria to penetrate the surrounding tissue and cause inflammation. Gum inflammation can occur even without the presence of tartar – for example, due to bacterial overgrowth or mechanical irritation. Therefore, oral health should be checked regularly and cared for individually.
