Bad breath in dogs – identifying causes

Bad breath in dogs is much more than just an unpleasant smell – it can be an indication of an imbalance in the oral flora, tartar, or even digestive problems. It is particularly common in small dog breeds with closely spaced teeth, but large dogs can also be affected. To get to the bottom of the cause, it’s worth taking a closer look inside your dog’s mouth – and at the bowl.

Common Causes of Bad Breath

In most cases, bacteria in the mouth and throat are responsible for bad breath. These microorganisms prefer to colonize plaque and tartar, where they can multiply undisturbed. Gases are produced during the metabolic process, causing the characteristic bad odor.

Gum irritation or microscopic inflammation often go undetected – but are often associated with unpleasant breath. In addition, digestive problems, an unbalanced diet, or a disturbed intestinal flora can indirectly lead to impaired oral flora.

Diet as a Risk Factor

Many commercially available ready-made foods – especially dry foods – contain artificial additives, sugar, flavorings, or inferior fillers. These not only promote the colonization of unwanted bacteria in the mouth, but also offer little mechanical friction for cleaning the teeth. If the dog is rarely provided with species-appropriate chews, plaque and deposits will persist.

When does bad breath become problematic?

Occasionally, slightly unpleasant breath after eating is normal – however, persistent or intense bad breath should be raised. Possible accompanying signs of an imbalance in the oral flora or dental health problems are:

  • Increased salivation
  • Bad breath despite dental care
  • Visible plaque or tartar
  • Reddened or receding gums
  • Loss of appetite or chewing on one side

Importance of regular dental care

A healthy mouth begins with regular check-ups and care. In addition to mechanical cleaning with suitable chews or gentle brushing, targeted supplementation with selected nutrients can also be useful to support the natural balance. The goal is not only to reduce unwanted bacterial populations in the short term, but also to promote balance in the long term.
