Cauda equina syndrome in dogs
Cauda Equina in Dogs – Causes & Symptoms
Cauda Equina Syndrome describes a neurological disorder in the lumbar spine region in which the nerve roots in the lower spinal cord are affected. It can lead to pain, restricted movement, and problems with the transmission of impulses. Medium-sized to large breed dogs are particularly affected, often in middle or old age.
Cauda Equina – Possible Causes
The causes are varied. Possible triggers include:
- age-related wear and tear of the vertebral and intervertebral disc structures,
- herniated discs,
- spondylosis,
- genetic predisposition in certain breeds,
- chronic incorrect or excessive strain.
Cauda Equina – Typical Symptoms
The most common signs include:
- pain in the lumbar region,
- disturbed movement patterns (e.g., lameness, unsteady gait),
- limited tail mobility,
- difficulty urinating or defecating,
- neurological abnormalities such as tremors or coordination problems.
An accurate diagnosis should always be made using imaging techniques such as MRI or CT.
