What is hip dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia (HD) in dogs is a congenital or acquired malposition of the hip joint, in which the femoral head is not optimally positioned in the hip socket. Large dog breeds are particularly affected, where genetic predispositions and overbreeding play a central role.
But external factors such as a permanently unbalanced diet, lack of exercise, or excessive strain during growth can also contribute to its development. A misalignment in the hip joint can disrupt load distribution and lead to degenerative changes in the long term.
Typical symptoms of hip dysplasia
Initial signs often appear in the form of:
- Changes in gait or hip weakness
- Difficulty standing up or jumping
- Avoidance of stairs
- Lameness or reduced mobility
In advanced cases, it can lead to pain, restricted movement, and complications such as inflammation or cartilage degeneration. The misalignment causes mechanical friction, which places additional strain on the joint cartilage. In many cases, this develops into osteoarthritis.
Treatment approaches for hip dysplasia
In cases of already severe misalignments, surgical treatment may be necessary. In less severe cases, conservative measures are used, including:
- adapted, low-impact exercise therapy
- weight regulation through a species-appropriate diet
- accompanying supply of specific micronutrients
Further aspects in dealing with Hip Dysplasia
In addition to the usual measures, the dog’s environment also plays an important role. Non-slip surfaces, well-padded resting areas, and avoiding unnecessary jumping movements further relieve pressure on the hip joint. Regular weight checks and moderate muscle training – adapted to the dog’s individual health status – can also help maintain the functional integrity of the joint structures. Close cooperation with physiotherapists or specialized veterinary practitioners can be beneficial in the long term.
