Mites are small, annoying and treacherous and are among the most common causes of allergic diseases. It was reported that there are up to 30,000 species. Food mites in particular often cause problems in dogs. Their size can be up to 0.5 mm. It is mainly food and house dust mites that occur most.
Forage mites are found in freshly sourced staple foods such as grain and corn. They also find food in plant waste, mold, for example, and secretions (skin cells, sweat) of both human and animal origin.
Dogs are almost always affected on the skin. Often even the dog’s ear, which is also covered with skin. This area is usually hit particularly hard. If there are recurring ear infections, a diagnosis needs to be made; allergy is at the top of the list. The dog’s skin quickly reacts to constant scratching, biting or licking with bacteria or yeast fungi because it is so unpleasant, as the veterinarian explains. In this phase it is not recommended to give cortisone. Because the body’s defenses are weakened under cortisone, and the chances of success are smaller.
As with humans, specific immunotherapy is also cited as the best treatment option for animals. According to the expert, an intracutaneous test should be carried out on dogs beforehand. Here the dog’s chances of success are given as 70 to 80 percent. Alternatively, there is therapy with medication and nutritional supplements, and there are now a variety of options available. For example, antihistamines, ointments, emulsions, sprays and shampoos. There are also products that are applied to the skin.
